One of the basic tenets of my Escape the Corporation Course is that Creative Power is available to everyone who will just take the time to learn how to tap into it. Now, an article in the December 2004 issue of Fast Company magazine, called The 6 Myths of Creativity confirms what I always suspected: “…that anyone with normal intelligence is capable of doing some degree of creative work.”
Now it’s one thing for me to say this but when Teresa Amabile, PhD says it, CEOs and other top management people sit up and listen. This is how the article describes Ms. Amabile:
“Teresa Amabile has been grappling with those questions (of creativity and where it comes from) for nearly 30 years. Amabile, who heads the Entrepreneurial Management Unit at Harvard Business School and is the only tenured professor at a top B-school to devote her entire research program to the study of creativity, is one of the country’s foremost explorers of business innovation.”
I don’t know about you but I’m definitely impressed with someone who heads the Entrepreneurial Management Unit at Harvard Business School. Ms. Amabile goes on to say she believes most people aren’t anywhere near to realizing their creative potential because they are stuck in “environments” that block their motivations.
How about you? Are you being as creative as you would like or do you feel frustrated by your current environment? Environment isn’t the only factor that can block your creativity. I think the trick is to align your six levels as below to maximize your chances of being highly creative:
- Spirit/Creative Power: This is the engine that drives your creative desires. Open yourself to this power and it will flow down through the lower levels and energize you like you’ve never felt before.
- Identity: Know what you want to do and why you want to do it. If this level is out of alignment, the power gets diverted and wasted.
- Beliefs: These are the filters that determine what you believe is possible for your work and your life. Self-limiting beliefs will filter out the Creative Power before you get to put it to work.
- Capabilities: I believe we all have more capabilities than we will ever use. Align the top 3 levels above and the Creative Power will flow into and expand your capabilities to perform whatever is necessary. You’ll also learn what new capabilities you should add so you can move forward towards your goals.
- Behaviors: This is your Action Center. Taking action is difficult and sometimes impossible when you are misaligned and feeling lost about what you want to do and why. But, align the top 4 levels and the power will flow easily and automatically into this level and you’ll find yourself anxious to take action and get moving.
- Environment: Your environment may very well be holding you back but then again, when you get aligned you just might see your current environment in a whole new light. If that happens, all the better and if it doesn’t you can start looking for the environment that will nurture and encourage your new creative energy.
